Breast Augmentation

By far the most common cosmetic surgical procedure we perform. It cannot only provide a fuller size but also correct mild to moderate right to left asymmetry and in some cases even mild drooping from post pregnancy changes. There are now variety of implant types and dimensions to choose from that best suit your goals. Recovery time can be as little as 5 to 7 days.

Our surgical procedures are highly individualized therefore we do not give estimates over the phone or e-mail.

Allergan® Recall

Last week Allergan announced a recall of a number of styles of their breast implants and expander products. This recall requested by the FDA was limited to those devices which had a textured shell surface that Allergan, and McGhan the company that they acquired, had trademarked as Biocell®. The reason for this voluntary recall was the association with the rare form of lymphoma, anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). To date there has been just under 600 cases reported worldwide but the overwhelming majority of these were from the Allergan product. While those textured implants had been available since the early 1990s, they have been used in less than 10% of the augmentations in this country but were quite popular in Europe. The most common of these was their Style 410 commonly referred to as the “gummy bear” implant.

This recall does not include the much more common smooth surfaced implants, nor does it include implants manufactured by Mentor™ a competing implant company. There has been no recommendation that patients with these implants have them removed at this time.

Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma is not breast cancer and breast cancer has not been linked with these implants.  While most authorities agree the likelihood of ALCL as a complication of breast augmentation using the recalled implants is less than 0.1%, the exact risk is not agreed upon and is still being studied.
